YouTube Music Added AI Labels. A Prompted Track Is Not a Music Video
YouTube Music started labeling songs created primarily with generative AI on 14 Oct 2026. Map Fully, Partly, and No Gen AI to lyrics, music, and clip desks before you upload.
YouTube Music Added AI Labels. A Prompted Track Is Not a Music Video
On 14 October 2026 YouTube published that YouTube Music is rolling out labels so listeners can see when a song was created primarily with generative AI. The example on that post is using a generative model to create the composition and vocals. The label sits on the player. Tapping it opens more information. YouTube says the same labels will expand to the main YouTube app, and that it is using music-partner declarations plus its own detection tools, under the labeling principles already used on video. ClipCanva is not affiliated with YouTube, Suno, VEED, or Kapwing. A player badge is not a lyrics card. A lyrics card is not a stem. A stem is not an 8-second visual. Write the line on the AI lyrics generator or the AI script generator. Generate the track on the AI music generator only after you know whether the audio is Fully or Partly Gen AI. Then storyboard the clip on prompt ideas and render on the AI music video desk, the AI video generator, or image to video. Do not treat “YouTube labeled it” as “the hook is signed.”
Product facts (confirmed 15 October 2026)
| Source | Public claim | Workflow implication |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Music adds new labels for AI music (YouTube, 14 Oct 2026) | “Starting today, YouTube Music is rolling out labels to make it easier to see when a song was created primarily using generative AI.” Example: “using a generative model to create the composition and vocals.” Labels “will also expand to the main YouTube app.” Label is “directly on the player page”; tapping opens “a simple menu.” Partners plus “our own detection tools.” Same “labeling principles already used across YouTube.” | A listener-facing music badge. Not a Studio checkbox for every independent upload, and not a music-video cut. |
| Same post | Points to the YouTube Help Center for “disclosure guidelines and standards.” | The badge copy on device is not specified in the blog post. Do not quote a string YouTube did not print. |
| Disclose Gen AI usage for music content (YouTube Help, fetched 15 Oct 2026) | Music partners “should disclose” Gen AI. YouTube “may use additional signals to augment partner declarations.” If partners send no Gen AI information, YouTube “will rely solely on those signals and may designate content as fully or partly Gen AI.” Delivery: DDEX ERN 4.3.2+, CSV templates, or the attribute section in YouTube Studio. | Declaration is a metadata desk. Silence is not “No Gen AI.” |
| Same Help article, designations | Fully Gen AI: all content created using generative AI. Partly Gen AI: part of the content. No Gen AI: no content created using generative AI. Empty value = unknown unless other signals decide. | Three affirmative labels plus unknown. Auto-Tune is not in this list as a fourth product. |
| Same Help article, suggested scenarios | Full: text prompt into an AI music generator, download the track; or a model generates composition, instrumental performance, and vocals. Partly: AI bassline/strings with live vocals; AI to brainstorm lyrics or melodies, then record in studio; 100% human-performed audio with a text-to-video music video. No Gen AI: Auto-Tune for minor live-vocal tuning; automated AI mastering for EQ/compression. | YouTube’s own Partly example is a human track plus an AI visual. That is a clip desk, not a song desk. |
| Same Help article, CSV | genai_declaration_asset_id can be a Sound Recording, Art Track, Music Video, or Web Video. contains_ai values: all, partly, none, unknown. |
A music video asset can carry the declaration. The visual is in scope. |
| Improving AI labels for viewers and creators (YouTube, 27 May 2026) | Photorealistic / meaningfully AI-altered video labels moved onto the player (long-form below the player; Shorts overlay). Auto-detection for significant photorealistic AI if the creator does not disclose. Creators can update an incorrect detection in Studio. | Video disclosure and music labels share principles. They are still different surfaces. |
| Disclosing use of GenAI content (YouTube Help) | Separate Help article for video GenAI disclosure, linked from “How this content was made.” | Do not file a song badge as a Shorts overlay. |
| Suno (fetched 15 Oct 2026) | “Make any song you can imagine.” v6; Studio DAW; Voices; stem separation; remix; custom models. Prompt, written lyrics, or “just a feeling.” | A song generator. Not a YouTube declaration, not a shot list. |
| VEED AI Video Script Generator | Own URL. VEED also lists an AI Music Generator as a separate tool. | Writer, music, and renderer stay different URLs. |
| Kapwing AI Video Script Generator | Own URL, next to a separate video generator in nav. | Script and video are still two desks. |
YouTube’s 14 October post does not publish a per-track royalty rule, a filter to hide AI songs, or the exact on-screen badge wording. TechCrunch (Lauren Forristal, 14 Oct 2026) and The Verge (Stevie Bonifield, 14 Oct 2026) covered the same rollout. Use YouTube’s post and Help articles for the designations. Use the press pieces only as coverage of other platforms (Deezer filter-in-progress, Spotify labels, Apple Music plans). Do not treat a reporter’s nickname for the badge as YouTube’s official string.
What the 14 October label is — and what it is not
Operators will collapse four objects into “YouTube tagged the AI song, so the Short is cleared.” The public pages refuse that.
| Surface | What the public page says it does | What it does not do | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Music player label (14 Oct) | Show listeners when a song was created primarily with generative AI; expand later to the main YouTube app | Sign the lyric; pick the first frame; file DDEX for you | Shipping a clip because the badge appeared |
| Partner Fully / Partly / No Gen AI | Metadata YouTube asked music partners to send (DDEX, CSV, or Studio attributes) | Rewrite the chorus; invent the end card | Leaving the field blank and calling it “No Gen AI” |
| YouTube detection signals | May designate fully or partly Gen AI if partners send nothing | Replace your own classification | Assuming silence is safer than partly |
| May 2026 video AI labels | Photorealistic / meaningfully altered video on the player or Shorts overlay | Classify the audio bed | Treating a music badge as a video disclosure |
| Suno (or any prompt-to-song tool) | Generate a track from a prompt, lyrics, or a feeling | Declare contains_ai on YouTube; lock a visual |
Pasting “make the Friday drop” into Suno and uploading the file as a human recording |
| VEED / Kapwing script URLs | Draft a script on a script URL | Generate the song; skip the still | Hitting generate-video from an unsigned verse |
If you typed a prompt and downloaded a song, YouTube’s own Full Gen AI example is that file. If you wrote lyrics, recorded the vocal, and then animated a still, you are on at least two desks, and YouTube’s own Partly example already covers “human audio, AI music video.” If you cannot name which, do not hit upload.
Pick the desk before YouTube picks the badge
The fail is treating “primarily generative AI” as “the campaign track is done.” Map the job.
| Job | Where it actually runs | What you must supply | What the system may invent | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Line a listener will read or sing | AI lyrics generator — or the AI script generator if the clip is spoken, not sung | Audience, seconds, the signed sentence or chorus | A second hook, a ranking claim, a sample you do not own | Skipping the card because “the model writes lyrics” |
| Playable track from a prompt or those lyrics | AI music generator, or Suno if that is already your song desk | Genre, structure, instrumental vs vocal, the same signed lyric | A different chorus, a celebrity-sounding voice, extra bars | Prompting “feeling” after Legal locked four lines |
| YouTube music-partner declaration | DDEX / CSV / Studio attributes per Help 17124251 | all, partly, none, or an honest unknown |
A quieter badge | Marking none because you only used the model for the bassline |
| Still that must stay on-model | Approved still, then image to video | Pack shot or artist still as frame one | Warped type, a second SKU, a face that is not the talent | Letting a prompted “album hero” replace the signed cover |
| Motion from a locked still, lyric card, or track IDs | AI music video, AI video generator, or a named model on Compare | Locked still and/or locked caption, crop, seconds, the music task/audio IDs if you are on ClipCanva’s music-video desk | Extra chrome, a mouthed line you did not approve | Generating B-roll first, writing the lyric never |
| Shot language | Prompt ideas | Four beats, not a chat novel | A fifth scene | Dumping the whole Suno prompt into the video model |
YouTube Help’s Partly example is the tell: a 100% human-performed song with a text-to-video music video is still Partly Gen AI. The visual is not a free extra. VEED still keeps Script Generator next to Music Generator and video tools. Kapwing still keeps Script Generator next to Video Generator. Suno still sells a song. None of those homepages say the 14 October player label writes your chorus.
Creator / operator checklist
- Read the 14 October sentence out loud. Labels for songs created primarily with generative AI. Composition and vocals are the example. If Slack says “YouTube will hide it, so we are fine,” stop. YouTube’s post is disclosure, not a takedown switch.
- Name the surface. Music player badge ≠ Studio video disclosure ≠ DDEX
contains_ai≠ Veo/Suno/ClipCanva. Screenshot the picker you will actually use. - Cap the lyric before you generate audio. Use the AI lyrics generator. One chorus. Strike unreleased features, competitor names, and any voice that sounds like a living artist you cannot license. A music model will not know which lines Legal signed.
- Classify the audio with YouTube’s three words, not with “we used AI a bit.” Prompt-in, file-out is YouTube’s Full example. AI stems plus a live vocal is Partly. Auto-Tune on a live take is YouTube’s suggested No Gen AI — minor tuning, not a generated singer.
- If the picture is generated, the music video is in scope. Help 17124251 says a human-performed song plus a text-to-video visual is Partly. CSV IDs include Music Videos. File the visual. Do not mark
nonebecause the WAV was recorded in a booth. - Do not leave the field blank to “let detection decide.” YouTube says it may then designate fully or partly from signals. Unknown is a state. It is not a strategy.
- Keep Suno (or ClipCanva music) as a song desk. Suno’s homepage is prompt, lyrics, or a feeling, then v6 / Studio / stems. That is the file. The AI music video desk still wants the music task ID and audio ID after the track exists.
- Keep VEED / Kapwing as a reminder, not a merge. Their script URLs still exist next to their renderers. Yours should too: lyrics or script, then music, then music video / generate / image to video.
- Do not copy Deezer, Spotify, or Apple Music rules onto YouTube. TechCrunch’s 14 October piece describes those platforms separately. YouTube’s post is labels, not a hide-AI toggle.
- Steal shot language, then write four beats. Use prompt ideas. A labeled player is not a shot list.
Worked example: a Friday drop that does not start in the music model
Say the job is an 8-second YouTube Short plus the track on YouTube Music. Legal line approved: Two-pack is back Friday. Same recipe. No new flavor. Someone opened YouTube’s 14 October post, saw “composition and vocals,” saw Suno’s “just a feeling,” and told the channel “generate the song, YouTube will label it, we are covered.”
That sentence mixes four desks.
The lyric is a writer object. Put the approved lines on the AI lyrics generator. If the Short is spoken over a bed, use the AI script generator instead. Suno will sing a feeling. It will not store that Legal signed this sentence.
The track is a song object. If you prompt an AI music generator and download the file, YouTube Help’s Full Gen AI example is that download. If you keep the signed lyric, record the vocal, and only generate a bed, you are in Partly — and you should say so in Studio or in the partner CSV. ClipCanva’s AI music generator is prompt-or-lyrics in, playable tracks out. Compare the result to the locked lyric before you attach visuals.
The beat list is a card object. Steal shot language from prompt ideas, then write four lines:
- 0s — locked product still or the signed cover, no extra SKU
- 3s — one motion: pack rotates or the chorus word holds; type stays readable
- 6s — end card with the signed sentence only
- 8s — stop. No second CTA
The picture is a first-frame object if the pack must stay on-model: lock the still, then image to video. If you already generated the track inside ClipCanva, the AI music video desk wants those two IDs, not a new prompt that forgets the song. If the shot is a prompted scene with no pack, name the model on Compare and generate on the AI video generator. YouTube Help already treats that visual as Partly Gen AI even when the audio is human.
The YouTube Music badge is a listener object. It tells someone the song was created primarily with generative AI. It does not file contains_ai. It does not replace the May 2026 video label if the Short is photorealistic AI. Check both surfaces before you call the drop shipped.
FAQ
Did YouTube Music start labeling AI songs on 14 October 2026? Yes. YouTube’s own post that day says YouTube Music is rolling out labels for songs created primarily with generative AI, with an example of a model creating composition and vocals, and that the labels will expand to the main YouTube app.
If I prompt Suno or ClipCanva’s music generator and download the file, what is that? YouTube Help’s suggested Full Gen AI scenario is exactly “a user enters a text prompt into an AI music generator and downloads the resulting track.” Treat the file as Fully unless you have a different, documented mix (live vocal over an AI bed is YouTube’s Partly example).
Does a human vocal over an AI beat avoid the label? Not as “No Gen AI.” YouTube’s Partly examples include generating a bassline or strings and recording live vocals over it, and using Gen AI to co-write verses then recording in studio. Partly is still a declaration.
Does an AI music video on a human recording stay unlabeled? YouTube Help’s Partly list includes “100% human-performed audio” with “accompanying music video visuals using a text-to-video AI model.” The visual counts. CSV asset IDs include Music Videos.
Is the music player label the same as the Shorts AI overlay? No. The 14 October post is YouTube Music. The 27 May 2026 post is photorealistic / meaningfully AI-altered video on long-form and Shorts. File both if you shipped both.
Will YouTube hide AI songs the way Deezer is building a filter? Not on the 14 October YouTube post. That post is disclosure. TechCrunch’s same-day Deezer story is a different company, with a toggle described as in progress before year-end. Do not copy it onto YouTube.
