Runway Unified Pricing vs Generate: One Credit Pool Is a Billing Desk, Not a New Clip
Runway unified pricing (18 Sep 2026) lets purchased credits spend on the web app and Runway Dev. Treat the pool as a billing desk: sign the script, lock the still, then generate.
Runway Unified Pricing vs Generate: One Credit Pool Is a Billing Desk, Not a New Clip
A shared invoice does not write the line. On 18 September 2026, Runway introduced unified pricing: purchased credits now spend across the web app and Runway Dev, with enterprise extras for a single invoice, admin usage visibility, and a tighter path from a custom web workflow to an API. ClipCanva is not affiliated with Runway, Canva, VEED, Kapwing, OpenAI, or Google. If you treat one credit pool as a generate pass, you will burn Gen-4.5 seconds on a pack shot whose claim was never signed, or you will keep an API job pointed at Sora after 24 September 2026. Lock the line on the AI script generator, lock the still, generate on the AI video generator or image to video, then spend credits.
Launch facts (confirmed 20 September 2026)
| Source | Public claim | Workflow implication |
|---|---|---|
| Runway: Working Smarter with Runway: Unified Pricing, 18 Sep 2026 | Purchased credits can be used across the web app and Runway Dev. Before this, Runway says teams ran separate credit pools and separate contracts. | This is a billing desk. It merges where credits can be spent. It does not write VO, lock a SKU, or pick 8 seconds vs a long cut. |
| Same Runway news post | For enterprise: one fungible credit pool, one invoice, usage visibility for admins, and a tighter path to build a custom workflow in the web app and expose it via API. | Admin visibility is not shot approval. An API Recipe still needs a signed script and a named model. |
| Same Runway news post | New Enterprises who sign up by 31 December 2026 get 10% more credits on signing — Runway’s footnote: a minimum of 130+ minutes of video or 12k+ images, converted from Gen-4.5 and Gen-4 Image at 1080p. Existing Enterprises who refer the product owner and purchase by the same date get 5,000 complimentary credits plus 1 Applied AI Architect day (Runway’s “$6,000+ value”). | Promo math is Runway’s conversion, not an independent bench. Confirm the live contract. Do not quote those minutes as a universal Gen-4.5 allotment on Standard/Pro/Max. |
| Runway pricing | Free: 125 one-time credits. Standard: $15 / $12 annual, 625 credits/mo (Runway: 52s of Gen-4.5, 104s of Gen-4 Turbo, or 78 Gen-4 Images at 1080p). Pro: $35 / $28, 2,250 credits. Max: $95 / $76, 9,500 credits, one-month rollover. FAQ: Gen-4.5 is 12 credits per second; extra purchases start at 1,000 credits and do not expire. Standard/Pro monthly allotments do not roll over. | Consumer plans are still credit-per-generation. Unified pricing does not change those per-model rates on this page. |
| Runway: Introducing Team Plan, 4 Sep 2026 | Team (2–9 seats): $69 / $55 annual per seat. Each seat adds 6,900 credits/month to a shared web pool. Unused Team credits roll over one month. Standard/Pro/Max became individual plans. Enterprise is for SSO, third-party model controls, multi-workspace, or more than nine seats. | Team’s “one pool” is seats on the web app. Unified pricing’s “one pool” is web + Dev. Do not merge the two launches in a brief. |
| Canva Help: Video clip | Canva AI Video clip: 8-second videos with audio, 6-second without. English prompts only. Optional reference image. You cannot manually change in-clip audio. | An 8-second social cut is not an enterprise credit-pool job. Split first. A shared invoice does not add a signed line. |
| VEED: Script to Video | Describe the video type → customize aspect / presenter / subtitles → type a script or generate one → export. Positions training, walkthroughs, tutorials. | VEED is assembly-from-script. Credit pooling is not on that page. Sign the script before anyone opens Dev. |
| OpenAI Help: Sora discontinuation | Sora web/app ended 26 April 2026. Sora API ends 24 September 2026. Export at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset. OpenAI lists no replacement. |
Do not spend a newly unified Runway pool — or any other pool — keeping a Sora API job alive past Thursday. Export, then regenerate on a living desk. |
Confirm the live Runway contract before you brief “web credits now equal Dev credits” for a Free workspace or a leftover individual plan. The 18 September post says purchased credits. Team (4 September) is a different pool. Enterprise offers are dated through 31 December 2026.
What a billing desk is — and what a generate desk is not
| Surface | What is actually on the public record | What operators often assume | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unified pricing (Runway news, 18 Sep) | Purchased credits spend on web + Dev; enterprise gets one invoice and admin flow | “We can generate more now” | Burning Gen-4.5 seconds on an unsigned claim |
| Team plan (Runway news, 4 Sep) | 2–9 seats, 6,900 credits/seat/month, web collaboration | Team is unified pricing | Briefing a 12-seat org onto Team, or treating seat credits as Dev credits |
| Runway pricing (consumer) | Standard 625 / Pro 2,250 / Max 9,500 credits; Gen-4.5 60 credits / 5s | Unified pricing rewrote those rates | Quoting 130+ enterprise minutes on a $12 Standard plan |
| Canva AI Video clip | 8s with audio / 6s silent | A place to dump an API Recipe | One paragraph, one generate, then “put it on the invoice” |
| VEED script-to-video | Script (typed or generated) → assemble | A clip model with native audio and a credit ledger | Pasting a Docs outline and calling the export a Gen-4.5 master |
| Sora API (OpenAI Help) | Dies 24 Sep 2026; no listed replacement | Credits will “move” to the next OpenAI video model | Keeping sora-2 / sora-2-pro in a pipeline because Runway pooled its credits |
| Generate desk | Text-to-video or image-to-video on a named model | A shared pool invents the missing beat | Spending first, writing the CTA later |
The useful split is the same one VEED already prints: script first, generate second. Runway’s 18 September post adds a third split: buy once, spend on web or Dev. None of those desks write the legal line for you. Fungible credits are accounting. They are not a new take.
Pick the desk before you pick the pool
The fail is treating “one purchase, one credit pool” as “generate again, cheaper.” A pooled Gen-4.5 file of the wrong product is still the wrong product. An API Recipe that ships a line legal did not approve is still a compliance miss.
| Job | Where it actually runs | What you must supply | What the system may invent | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spoken claim, legal line, CTA | AI script generator | Audience, one claim, duration, forbidden words | Extra steps, unearned superlatives | Opening Dev first, writing VO later |
| Hero still / pack shot / first frame | Image to video after a locked still | Readable type, true SKU, lighting you would ship | Warped labels, extra hands, wrong colourway | Spending credits animating a still you would not print |
| Short signed clip | AI video generator or Canva-class 8s / 6s | Prompt + duration + audio yes/no | Ambient noise, unasked cuts | Treating an 8-second English-prompt clip as a five-minute Recipe |
| Shot list / prompt card | Prompt ideas | Camera, lighting, one action | Style adjectives that fight the brand | Prompting “cinematic” instead of the signed line |
| Model choice when the first desk warps the label | Compare | Two named models, one still, one line | A “best model” ranking you did not test | Blaming the credit pool for a bad still |
| Source tape / lecture you must quote | AI video summarizer | The file, the timestamps you will keep | A paraphrase that is not the quote | Summarizing after you already generated the ad |
| Web exploration vs API batch | Runway web app vs Runway Dev (unified spend, not unified job) | Which surface, which model, which length | “The Recipe will pick it” | One invoice for two different shots with no owner |
| Legacy Sora jobs | Export desk, then a living generate desk | Files out of sora.chatgpt.com/sunset before 24 Sep 2026 |
A replacement OpenAI video API (not listed) | Paying Runway or anyone else to keep Sora aliases alive |
Runway’s own marketing example on the 18 September post is a global marketing team that starts with a product shot and a brand reference, iterates in the web app (they name Aleph 2.0 for relighting and background swaps), then A/B tests. That sequence still starts with a shot, not with an invoice. If the product shot is wrong, pooling Dev credits will not fix the label.
Operator workflow: invoice last
Job: signed line → locked still → named model → then spend
Script desk: one claim, duration, forbidden words
Clip desk: 8s with audio / 6s silent (Canva-class) or named model on ClipCanva
Still desk: lock first frame before image-to-video
Billing desk: Runway unified pricing AFTER the picture is true
Team (4 Sep): 2–9 seats, 6,900 credits/seat/month, web pool
Unified (18 Sep): purchased credits, web + Dev; enterprise invoice + admin view
Consumer rates (pricing page): Standard 625 / Pro 2,250 / Max 9,500; Gen-4.5 12 credits/s
Promo window: new/existing Enterprise offers through 31 Dec 2026 — Runway’s own conversion
Do not: merge Team with unified; do not spend the pool on a Sora API job past 24 Sep 2026
Work the ticket in that order even if finance already bought the pool. Credits are cheapest when you throw away the fewest wrong files.
- Write the line. One claim, duration, words you will not say. Use the AI script generator or VEED’s script step. Do not “see what Gen-4.5 says.”
- Lock the still. If the job is a pack shot, the type must be readable at rest. Image-to-video on a lie is a paid lie.
- Name the desk. Canva-class 8-second social, ClipCanva generate, Runway web exploration, or Runway Dev batch. Unified pricing lets purchased credits move between the last two. It does not turn Canva into Dev.
- Name the model and the length. Gen-4.5 at 12 credits/second is a different burn than Aleph 2.0 at 140 credits/5s on the public pricing table. Do not brief “130+ minutes” from the enterprise footnote onto a Standard plan.
- Spend. Then A/B. Then, if the first model warps the label, compare — do not double the pool and hope.
- Export Sora. If anything in the chain still calls
sora-2or the Videos API, export this week. OpenAI’s help article lists no successor.
Creator / operator checklist
- [ ] You can point to the Runway news date (18 September 2026) and you did not treat Team (4 September) as the same launch.
- [ ] The brief says purchased credits, web + Dev — not “Free 125 credits now hit the API.”
- [ ] Enterprise extras (one invoice, admin usage, Recipe path, Dec 31 offers) are only in the brief if you are actually on Enterprise.
- [ ] Team seats (2–9, 6,900 credits/seat/month) are not used as a stand-in for Dev credits.
- [ ] Spoken words were signed on a script desk before anyone opened Runway Dev.
- [ ] Hero pack shot used a locked still. Type is readable before you spend Gen-4.5 seconds.
- [ ] Length and model are named. You did not quote Runway’s 130+ minutes / 12k images footnote as a Standard-plan allotment.
- [ ] Canva 8s/6s clips were split, not dumped into an API Recipe.
- [ ] VEED-style assembly still has a typed or generated script, not a pooled invoice.
- [ ] No leftover Sora API dependency past 24 September 2026.
- [ ] Consumer rollover rules still match the pricing FAQ: Standard/Pro reset; Max rolls one month; purchased extras do not expire.
- [ ] No claim that ClipCanva, Runway, VEED, or Canva are the same product.
FAQ
Does unified pricing generate a new video from a prompt? No. Runway’s 18 September post is explicit: purchased credits now spend on the web app and Runway Dev, with enterprise billing and admin visibility. Prompt-to-clip still belongs on a generate desk such as the AI video generator. A credit pool is accounting. It does not write the shot.
Is this the same as Runway Team? No. Team (4 September 2026) pools seat credits on the web app for 2–9 people at $69 / $55 annual per seat, 6,900 credits per seat per month. Unified pricing (18 September) is web + Dev spend for purchased credits, with extra enterprise invoice and Recipe language. A 12-seat org is still pointed at Enterprise on the Team post. Do not paste both paragraphs into one SOW.
Does a shared pool mean I can skip the script? No. A video script generator is where you accept the words. VEED still asks for a script before it assembles. Canva’s clip desk still caps you at 8 seconds with audio. Extra credits will not add a CTA you never signed.
Can I move Canva or Sora credits into Runway’s pool? Not on any page cited here. Canva AI Video clip is an 8-second / 6-second English-prompt desk (Canva Help). Sora’s API dies 24 September 2026 with no listed replacement (OpenAI Help). Export Sora files. Regenerate on a living desk. Do not assume invoices transfer.
Should I still generate on ClipCanva if Runway pooled web and Dev? If the job is a signed short with a locked still, yes: script on the AI script generator, still on image to video, or text-to-clip on the AI video generator. Use Compare when the first desk warps the label. Runway’s billing desk is Runway’s. It does not sign your claim.
A shared invoice is a gift only if the picture was already true. Unified pricing is a billing desk. Runway did not give you a generate button. Do not pretend it did.
