Runway MCP on Cursor vs Generate Desk: A Marketplace Plugin Is Not a Signed Clip
Runway MCP on Cursor is a generate host, not a writer. Separate Dev MCP from mcp.runwayml.com, lock the script, then generate the clip.
Runway MCP on Cursor vs Generate Desk: A Marketplace Plugin Is Not a Signed Clip
A Cursor plugin is a generate host. It is not a writer. On 23 September 2026, Runway’s changelog listed Runway MCP on Cursor under All Plans: the plugin is on Cursor’s Marketplace, and it brings Runway’s generative tools into a Cursor chat. The plugin README is explicit about what that means — a thin wrapper around https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp, a /runway command, and two skills. It is not a legal review. ClipCanva is not affiliated with Runway, Cursor, xAI, Canva, VEED, Kapwing, or Kling. Lock the line on the AI script generator first. Then generate on the AI video generator or image to video. Do not type “cinematic product ad” in Composer and call take one a launch.
Launch facts (confirmed 28 September 2026)
| Source | Public claim | Workflow implication |
|---|---|---|
| Runway changelog (23 Sep 2026) | Runway MCP on Cursor — “now available on Cursor's Marketplace,” bringing generative capabilities into a Cursor workflow. Tagged All Plans. Same day: DaVinci Resolve plugin (paid plans). | Marketplace install is a host. Cursor is not a brand-safety queue. The Resolve plugin is a different surface — already its own desk. |
| Cursor Marketplace: Runway | “Generate images, videos, music, speech, and sound effects with Runway — Gen-4.5, Aleph, Seedance, Kling, GPT Image and more — from Cursor and Grok Bot. Sign in with your Runway account; no API key needed.” Status: approved. | The listing names models and media types. It does not name a duration, a credit price, or a signed claim. |
| runwayml/runway-mcp-plugin README | Thin wrapper around https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp. Skills: runway-media (single-shot generate/edit) and runway-workflows (workflow graphs). OAuth 2.1 with PKCE via auth.runwayml.com. Credits come from the existing Runway plan. Purchases happen on runway.com, never in chat. |
Chat can spend. Chat cannot buy. Chat cannot invent a pack shot legal did not approve. |
| Same README | Cursor: /add-plugin, search Runway. Grok Bot: Plugins sidebar; “Grok Bot installs plugins from the Cursor Marketplace; the same listing serves both.” Grok Build: grok plugin install runway --trust, or grok mcp add --transport http runway https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp. |
One listing, three hosts. A Grok thread is still generate. |
| Runway Dev: Connect Dev MCP | Dev MCP at https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp lets a coding agent look up tasks, manage model routers, and read docs without copying an API key into mcp.json. “This is separate from the generation MCP at mcp.runwayml.com, which creates media in chat.” Complete OAuth in your normal browser. Do not ask an agent to automate sign-in. |
Two servers. Dev ≠ generate. Wiring a router is not shipping a clip. |
| Introducing Runway Dev MCP (2 Sep 2026) | Hosted MCP for coding tools: pick a model, pull the request schema, configure a Model Router, inspect Characters, debug a failed task (moderation, asset size, malformed body). | Dev MCP is an integration desk. It is not a video script generator. |
| Changelog (22 Sep 2026) | Brand Kits in Runway MCP — agents can find Brand Kits and use those assets as references. Read-only via MCP; create/edit still happens in product. All Plans. | A kit is a reference. It is not a license to mint a bottle the kit does not contain. |
| Same changelog (18 Sep 2026) | Kling models on Runway MCP: Kling O3 4K, Kling 3.0 Standard, Kling O3 Standard, Kling 3.0 Motion Control. Paid Plans. | Aliases in MCP are routing. Confirm the live picker and the plan. Do not paste this list onto a free-plan brief. |
| Same changelog (17 Sep 2026) | Runway MCP for Grok Bot — plugin; sign in with a Runway account to generate images and video from a Grok Bot chat. Paid Plans. | Paid-plan chat generate is still generate. |
Runway has not published, on the changelog, the Marketplace listing, or the plugin README, a per-generation credit price or a clip duration for Cursor. If a number is not on those pages, it is not a brief.
Two MCP servers — pick the one you actually installed
Operators will collapse “Runway MCP” into one button. The docs refuse that.
| Surface | Official endpoint | What the public page says it does | What it does not do | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generation MCP (Cursor / Grok plugin) | https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp |
Create media in chat: images, video, music, speech, SFX; run workflow graphs | Sign the on-screen line; buy credits; edit Brand Kits | Prompting “hero ad, expensive light, confident VO” with no card |
| Runway Dev MCP | https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp |
Look up tasks, manage model routers, read docs, debug failures | Create the clip in chat (docs: separate server) | Treating whoami on a Dev account as proof the restock rendered |
| Brand Kits via generation MCP | Changelog, 22 Sep | Find kits; use assets as read-only references | Create or edit the kit | Asking MCP to invent a SKU the kit never photographed |
| Kling aliases on generation MCP | Changelog, 18 Sep, Paid Plans | Four Kling names available on that MCP | Unlimited, any plan, any duration | Quoting O3 4K on a seat that cannot call it |
If the agent answers whoami with a Developer Portal email, you connected Dev. If the agent starts a generation task and mentions credits, you connected generation. If you cannot tell which, stop. Do not spend.
Pick the desk before you type /runway
The fail is treating “Runway is in Cursor now” as “Cursor wrote the campaign.” Map the job.
| Job | Where it actually runs | What you must supply | What the system may invent | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legal line, spoken words, on-screen claim | AI script generator — or Kapwing’s separate Script Generator if that is already your writer | Audience, one claim, duration, forbidden words | Extra superlatives, a second CTA | Pasting a slogan into /runway because the skill says “media” |
| Shot list / clip-length beats | Script output + a scene card; reusable language on prompt ideas | Shot size, camera move, cut, seconds | Decorative adjectives that fight the take | One paragraph dumped into Composer |
| Still that must stay on-model | Stills desk, then image to video | Approved pack shot as frame one | Camera path, warped type, extra logos | Asking Brand Kits-via-MCP to mint the bottle |
| Motion from a locked still or a named model | AI video generator or a named model on Compare | Locked still and/or locked caption, crop, seconds | Extra props, a second spoken line | Hopping to “whatever Kling alias MCP lists” mid-brief |
| Long recording → short spoken plan | AI video summarizer, then script | Source cut, claims you will keep | Compression that changes meaning | Asking /runway to “just recap the webinar” into a master |
| Script + visuals + narration in one vendor button | VEED AI Video Generator: “No filming, no studio — just type and create.” Nav still lists AI Script Generator as its own item | A script you accept | Footage, VO, a second claim | Using VEED’s one-shot as proof Cursor signed the line |
| API integration, routers, failed-task debug | Runway Dev MCP | Dev account, browser OAuth you complete yourself | Nothing you can ship to a feed | Putting an API key in mcp.json against the docs |
If the brief is “install the plugin,” that is IT. If the brief is “the two-pack restocks Friday,” that is script, then generate. If the brief is “the agent will handle it,” you do not have a brief.
Cursor plugin vs VEED vs Kapwing vs Dev MCP
| Dimension | Runway generation MCP in Cursor / Grok | Runway Dev MCP | VEED generate | Kapwing generate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official surface | Changelog 23 Sep; Marketplace; plugin README | Connect Dev MCP; 2 Sep news | AI Video Generator | AI Video Generator; Script Generator |
| What they sell on the page | Generate/edit image, video, music, speech, SFX from chat; workflow graphs; sign in, no API key in the plugin | Coding agent vs Developer Portal: routers, schemas, task lookup, docs. Not the chat generate server | “Generate videos from text, scripts, or images… visuals, AI voiceovers, avatars, and subtitles.” “No filming, no studio” | Free, online, no download. Script Generator and Video Generator are separate AI nav items |
| Script desk | You bring it. /runway generates |
You bring it. Dev MCP does not write the VO | VEED lists Script Generator next to generate | Script is a different tool from Video Generator |
| Plan / spend | README: existing Runway plan credits; purchases on runway.com. Kling-on-MCP: Paid Plans. Cursor listing: All Plans in the changelog — that is install, not a free generate pass | Dev account required. Do not put keys in config | Free to try on the public page; accept the script before you scale | Script tool is free-online positioned; video generate is a second click |
| What not to use it for | Read-only Brand Kits as a SKU mint; Kling O3 4K on an unconfirmed plan; letting Composer author the claim | Proof a restock rendered; automating OAuth with the agent | Proof that a Cursor plugin merged writer and renderer | Proof that MCP wrote the line |
Kapwing’s public IA still splits script and video. That split is the correct operator habit the week a generate server lands in an IDE. VEED’s generate page still sells completeness; its nav still keeps AI Script Generator as its own item. Do not brief a copy deck on a Marketplace card.
Creator / operator checklist
- Write the one line the clip must carry. A plugin cannot rescue a sentence legal will strike. Use the AI script generator. Strike “#1,” ingredient claims, and competitor names you cannot defend.
- Name which MCP you connected. Generation is
mcp.runwayml.com. Dev isdev.runwayml.com/mcp. The Dev docs call them separate. If the agent cannot say which, disconnect. - Complete OAuth in your browser. Dev docs: do not ask an agent to automate sign-in. The plugin README: no API keys in the repo; sign in when prompted.
- Paste the signed card into
/runway, not a vibe. Therunway-mediaskill will generate, restyle, expand, upscale, or localize. It will also invent a second CTA if you let it. - Treat Brand Kits as read-only references. The 22 September changelog says create/edit still happens in product. If the kit has no bottle, you do not have a bottle.
- Name the model on purpose. Marketplace copy lists Gen-4.5, Aleph, Seedance, Kling, GPT Image. Kling aliases on MCP are a Paid Plans changelog line. If you need a named motion model, compare on Compare rather than hopping because Composer suggested one.
- Keep a scene card. Steal shot language from prompt ideas, then generate one scene. Do not dump a paragraph into
/runwaybecause the skill mentions workflow graphs. - If the job is captions or cuts on footage you already have, that is an edit desk — not a reason to install a generate plugin.
- Do not buy in chat. The README says purchases happen on runway.com. If credits are gone, leave the IDE.
Worked example: a Friday restock that does not start in Composer
Say the job is a restock cutdown. The two-pack ships Friday. Legal line approved: Same bottle. Same seal. Restock Friday. The hero still exists. Someone installed the Runway plugin this morning.
Do not: open Cursor, type /runway cinematic 1080p product ad, expensive light, confident voiceover, Kling O3 4K, Brand Kit, world-class because the Marketplace card lists Kling and the changelog says All Plans.
Do:
- Lock the line on the AI script generator. Do not add “clinically proven” in chat.
- Confirm the still. If the bottle was shot, you are in restyle or image to video from that frame — not in “let the agent invent a label.”
- If you still want MCP, paste the signed card + locked still, name one model you can actually call, and generate one scene. Check the credit warning the tools announce.
- If you needed a router or a failed-task reason, that is Dev MCP, in a different client config, after browser OAuth you completed yourself.
- VO stays a separate desk unless you already recorded it. Marketplace copy lists speech and sound effects. That is not permission to ship an unsigned voice.
That is the whole product. Runway put generate next to the linter. It did not make the restock true.
FAQ
Is Runway MCP on Cursor the same as Runway Dev MCP?
No. Runway’s Dev docs say Dev MCP at https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp is separate from the generation MCP at mcp.runwayml.com, which creates media in chat. The Cursor plugin wraps the generation server. Do not mix the configs.
Does “All Plans” on the 23 September changelog mean free generate in Cursor? The changelog tags the Marketplace availability as All Plans. The plugin README says generations use your existing Runway plan and consume credits. Kling models on MCP are tagged Paid Plans (18 Sep). Confirm the live picker. Do not brief a free seat as O3 4K.
Can Grok Bot use the same plugin? Yes, according to the README: Grok Bot installs from the Cursor Marketplace; the same listing serves both. The 17 September changelog lists Runway MCP for Grok Bot under Paid Plans. A Grok thread is still a generate host, not a writer.
Does this replace a video script generator?
No. /runway generates and edits media. It does not sign the claim. Lock the line on the AI script generator first. Kapwing already splits Script Generator from Video Generator in its nav for the same reason.
Should I generate in Cursor or on a dedicated video desk? Use Cursor/MCP when the card is signed, the still is locked, and you want the agent to call a named tool without leaving the editor. Use the AI video generator or image to video when you need a scene desk with model, crop, and duration in one place. Use VEED only if you actually want their script-plus-narration one-shot, and you still have to accept the script.
The plugin changed the round trip. It did not change the order of operations: script, still, then generate.
