Gemini 3.8 Live vs Video Script Generator: A Voice Brief Is Not a Shippable Clip
Google’s Gemini 3.8 Live models output spoken audio and text, not finished video. Use the live session as a brief, lock a script, then generate clips.
Gemini 3.8 Live vs Video Script Generator: A Voice Brief Is Not a Shippable Clip
A live voice session is a briefing desk. It is not a video. On 15 September 2026 — updated 17 September — Google launched Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking: native speech-to-speech models that take audio, images, video, and text, then answer in audio and text. The DeepMind model card is explicit about outputs. It does not list a finished clip. ClipCanva is not affiliated with Google, Canva, VEED, or OpenAI. Talk the brief if you want. Then lock the line on the AI script generator, lock a still, and generate on the AI video generator or image to video. Do not ship the conversation.
Launch facts (confirmed 22 September 2026)
| Source | Public claim | Workflow implication |
|---|---|---|
| Google: Introducing Gemini 3.8 Live (15 Sep 2026, updated 17 Sep) | Two live dialogue models. 3.8 Live: scale and cost efficiency, fluid dialogue, visual grounding. 3.8 Live Extended Thinking: high-complexity, multi-step reasoning. Near real-time visual inputs. Mid-conversation switch across 97 languages. Tools and API calls run in the background while the model keeps talking. | The session can see a product, a sketch, or a screen. Seeing is not signing the claim. Write the line after the call. |
| Same Google post | Extended Thinking: #1 on Artificial Analysis Speech to Speech Quality Index (82.6); 68.6% on τ-Voice; 35.1% on Sierra’s τ-Voice-banking; 97.7% on Big Bench Audio. 3.8 Live: second in Speech Agent Arena. EVA-Bench note: run on the Live API on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. | Those scores measure spoken agents, not pack-shot fidelity. Do not paste them into a video SOW. |
| Same Google post | Rollout: 3.8 Live in Gemini API, Google AI Studio, Search Live; enterprise private preview in Gemini Enterprise. Extended Thinking in Gemini API, AI Studio, Gemini Live; Docs Live for Google AI Pro and Ultra; Gmail and Keep for all Google AI subscribers. Workspace business customers “coming soon.” | Confirm the surface before you brief a client that “Gemini Live is on.” Search Live is not Docs Live. |
| Google: Build real-time voice applications (15 Sep 2026) | Native speech-to-speech via the Live API. Capabilities listed: asynchronous function calling, visual context, alphanumeric precision, 97+ languages, incremental content updates. Priced at $0.005/min audio input and $0.018/min audio output (Google’s footnote: estimate from $3 / 1M input tokens and $12 / 1M output tokens). | You are buying minutes of talk, not seconds of generated video. Do not convert Live minutes into clip credits. |
| Same developer post | Gemini 3.5 Transcribe is a separate speech-to-text model: 85+ languages; Word Error Rate 4.0% streaming / 2.6% non-streaming. Smart transcription mode strips filler. Interactions API can transcribe files up to 1 hour with timestamps and speaker labels. | Transcribe is an input desk. A clean transcript is still not a signed script. |
| DeepMind model card: Gemini 3.8 Audio (published 15 Sep 2026) | Inputs: audio, images, video, and text; context up to 128K tokens. Outputs: audio and text, 64K token output. Based on Gemini 3 Pro. Intended use: continuous streams that deliver spoken responses in real time. Knowledge cutoff January 2025. Known limits include hallucinations, occasional slowness or timeouts. | Video is an input. Audio/text is the output. Pointing a camera at the hero SKU does not render the hero clip. |
| Same model card + Google blog | All audio from Google AI products is watermarked with SynthID. | A watermark is a trace. It is not legal approval of your price, ingredient list, or CTA. |
| VEED: Script to Video | Describe the video type, customize aspect ratio / presenter / subtitles, then type a script or generate one, then download or keep editing. Positions training, walkthroughs, tutorials. TTS character cap on that page: 5,000 per project. | VEED is assembly-from-script. A Live ramble is not that script. |
| VEED: AI Video Script Generator | Topic → vibe → format → script with hooks, key points, and a CTA. Then copy, or turn it into a video. | The useful split is already on the page: script first, generate second. |
| Canva Help: Create a video clip | Canva AI 1.0 Video clip: 8-second videos with audio, 6-second without. English prompts only. Optional reference image. You cannot manually change in-clip audio. Wait up to 2 minutes. Canva “blocks inappropriate prompts and moderates content.” | Canva is batch with a wait. It will not swallow a five-minute Live briefing. Split the line first. |
Confirm the live generator, plan gate, and price table before you quote minutes or Arena scores in a contract. Google’s 82.6 / τ-Voice numbers are Google-reported. The model card’s January 2025 cutoff means the voice agent may not know this week’s SKU. Do not invent a “Live-to-clip” button.
What a live dialogue model is — and what a script desk is not
| Surface | What is actually on the public record | What operators often assume | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.8 Live | Speech-to-speech + visual grounding; 97 languages; background tools | A video generator that “just talks the ad out” | Recording the call and posting it as the pack shot |
| 3.8 Live Extended Thinking | Reasons and speaks at once; fillers such as “Let me check that…”; live progress narration | A director that already signed legal | Shipping the filler as the VO |
| Live visual input | Near real-time images/video into the conversation | Native text-to-video | “It saw the bottle, so the clip is done” |
| Gemini 3.5 Transcribe | 85+ languages; 4.0% / 2.6% WER; up to 1-hour files | A scriptwriter | Publishing the raw transcript as the explainer |
| VEED script generator | Prompt → script with hook / points / CTA | A generate button | Skipping the refine step |
| VEED script-to-video | Typed or generated script → assembly | Native Live audio and a finished clip | Pasting a Docs Live ramble into “Make with AI” |
| Canva Video clip | 8s with audio / 6s silent; English; wait up to 2 minutes | A place to dump the whole briefing | One paragraph, one generate, unreadable type |
| Generate desk | Named model, locked still, finished file | The voice agent invents the missing beat | Spending first, writing the claim later |
Google’s own demos are the tell: onboarding Q&A, chess, sketches-to-React, restaurant bookings, a spoken daily brief. Those are operator loops. They are not 8-second ads. DeepMind even lists Veo as a separate specialized model for cinematic video with audio. If the job is a clip, you are on the wrong family.
Pick the desk before you unmute
The fail is treating “we talked it through Live” as “legal signed it.” Extended Thinking will keep chatting while tools run. That is good for a booking. It is bad for a claim. The model card says these systems can hallucinate. A live session with a January 2025 cutoff will happily invent a feature that shipped in June.
Use Live for what it is:
- Point the camera or share the still. Visual grounding is for “is this the right bottle / UI / diagram?” not for rendering motion.
- Talk the job. Audience, offer, objection, one CTA. Interrupt it. Switch language if you must — Google documents 97-language mid-conversation switching.
- Export the useful sentences. If you recorded the call, run it through a transcribe desk. Keep the claims. Throw away the “let me check that.”
- Lock a script. One hook, one proof, one CTA, timed to the clip length you will actually generate. Do that on the AI script generator. If the source is a long talk-track or a webinar, summarize first on the AI video summarizer, then cut the summary into beats. Do not paste the Live transcript into a clip prompt.
- Lock a still. Live saw the product. The generate desk still needs a frame. Use prompt ideas for shot language, then image to video.
- Generate a finished file. Text-to-clip on the AI video generator. If the first model warps the label, switch on Compare. Download the file. A conversation is not a master.
VEED already prints the same order on two pages: generate or type a script, then make the video. Canva’s clip desk is six or eight seconds. If your Live briefing ran four minutes, you have several cards, not one prompt.
Creator / operator checklist
- [ ] You can point to the Google launch date (15 September 2026, blog updated 17 September) and you did not treat Live as Veo.
- [ ] The brief says audio + text out. Video is listed as an input on the model card, not as a render.
- [ ] Arena / τ-Voice / 82.6 scores stay in the voice-agent column. They are not clip quality.
- [ ] Live minutes ($0.005 / $0.018) are not converted into generate credits.
- [ ] Plan gates match the post: Search Live ≠ Docs Live ≠ Gemini Enterprise private preview.
- [ ] SynthID is listed as an audio watermark, not as legal sign-off.
- [ ] Knowledge cutoff January 2025 is in the brief. This week’s SKU was checked against a source, not against the voice agent.
- [ ] Spoken words were signed on a script desk before anyone hit generate.
- [ ] Hero pack shot used a locked still. Type is readable before anyone talks to Live again.
- [ ] Canva 8s/6s clips were split, not dumped from a five-minute briefing.
- [ ] VEED-style assembly still has a typed or generated script, not a raw Live dump.
- [ ] Long talk-tracks went through the AI video summarizer before they became clip cards.
- [ ] No leftover Sora API dependency past 24 September 2026. A live Gemini voice agent is not an OpenAI video replacement.
- [ ] No claim that ClipCanva, Google, VEED, or Canva are the same product.
A 90-second briefing that actually ships
Say the job is an 8-second restock ad.
Do not: open Gemini Live, describe the product for two minutes, then paste the whole answer into Canva Video clip or a text-to-video box.
Do:
- Hold the still up to Live only to confirm color, label, and angle. Stop talking when those three are agreed.
- Dictate one sentence: hook, proof, CTA. Example shape, not a magic prompt: Restock Friday. Same bottle, same seal. Tap to claim the two-pack.
- Drop that sentence into the AI script generator. Cut it until it fits eight seconds with audio, or six without, if you are exiting through Canva’s documented caps.
- Generate the motion from the locked still on image to video. If you need a different model for the same still, use Compare.
- Listen to the file. If the VO drifted, fix the script, not the Live session.
That is the whole product. Live made the brief faster. It did not make the clip.
FAQ
Does Gemini 3.8 Live generate video? No. Google’s consumer and developer posts describe live dialogue. The model card lists outputs as audio and text. Video appears under inputs. Cinematic video with audio is a different DeepMind line (Veo). Prompt-to-clip still belongs on a generate desk such as the AI video generator.
Should I record the Live session and use it as the voiceover? Only if legal signed that exact take. Extended Thinking is built to keep speaking while tools run, including filler (“Let me check that…”). SynthID will mark Google-generated audio. A watermarked ramble is still a ramble. Lock a script, then generate or record VO on purpose.
Live or Extended Thinking for a creator brief? Google’s split: 3.8 Live for scale, cost, fluid talk, visual grounding. Extended Thinking for multi-step work with background reasoning. For a product ad, you usually need the cheap, fast talk — then you leave. You do not need a voice agent booking a restaurant inside the brief.
How is this different from a video script generator? A video script generator outputs lines you can time, edit, and refuse. VEED’s script tool does the same job on their side: hooks, points, CTA, then copy or generate. Live outputs a conversation. Conversations do not have a duration cap that matches Canva’s 6/8-second clip desk.
Is a Gemini Live agent a Sora replacement? No. OpenAI’s Sora web/app ended 26 April 2026; the Sora API ends 24 September 2026. Google Live is a voice surface. If you still have a Sora dependency, export assets and regenerate clips on a living generate desk. Do not wait for a speech model to grow a timeline.
A live briefing is a gift only if you never needed a file. Gemini 3.8 Live is a voice desk. Google did not give you a generate button. Do not pretend it did.
