Canva’s own split is a useful third map, not a partnership. Canva Help still separates Magic Video (upload clips, templated social cut up to 60 seconds) from Magic Media text-to-video and Create a Video Clip. Magic Video is assembly. Resolve’s assistant is editorial. Runway’s plugin is generation and restyle. Mixing the three in one chat hides the approval gate.

Draft-then-cut workflow

Write the packet once. Change only the variable. Promote only winners.

1. Name the output. Example: one 9:16 Reel, 45 seconds, English, one claim, no competitor names, cut from a 28-minute product webinar.
2. Recap the source. Run the recording through the AI video summarizer. Keep timestamps for the lines you will allow on camera. Discard jokes, pricing asides, and anything legal has not signed.
3. Lock the spoken plan. Move the keepers into the AI script generator: hook, scene plan, on-screen text, voiceover, visual direction, close. The assistant in Resolve can cut. It should not author the claim.
4. Ingest, then ask. Only after the packet exists do you open Resolve 21.1, connect the assistant, and request a highlight edit that matches the runtime and the keep-list. Blackmagic’s own examples are organize, cut, remove shorts, render — not “make me an ad.”
5. Fill holes on a different desk. If the highlight needs a pack-shot insert that was never filmed, do not prompt the NLE. Generate from an approved still on image to video, or compare clip models on ClipCanva Compare. Park reusable camera language in prompt ideas.
6. Gate before export. Watch the cut against the script. If a line appeared that is not on the keep-list, it is a fail, not a style.

What did DaVinci Resolve 21.1 add for AI?

Blackmagic’s 8 September 2026 IBC release names AI assistant integration. You connect tools such as Claude, Claude Code, or ChatGPT Codex so they can analyze a project, organize media, change settings, batch render, cut highlight edits from long-form video, remove unwanted clips, and render deliverables. Trade write-ups also list a native MCP server. Built-in Neural Engine tools from earlier 21.x releases (IntelliSearch, speech generator, CineFocus, and others) are a separate, on-device family. Do not collapse them into the new chat assistant.

Does the Resolve AI assistant generate video from a prompt?

Not in the launch materials. The press examples are editorial: highlights, cleanup, render. If you need a shot that was never captured, use a generator such as ClipCanva’s AI video generator or image to video, then import the keeper.

Is the AI assistant in free DaVinci Resolve or only Studio?

Blackmagic’s press release describes 21.1 assistant integration without a one-line free-vs-Studio split. Newsshooter’s 21.1 list says advanced scripting requires Studio and lists the native MCP server among general improvements. CG Channel lists new Studio licenses at $295. How is this different from the Runway Adobe plugin?

Resolve’s assistant operates on media inside Resolve. Runway’s plugin generates or restyles pixels inside Premiere or After Effects and bills Runway credits. Use Resolve when the footage exists. Should I skip the summarizer and paste the webinar into Resolve chat?

No. A 28-minute file is not a 45-second claim list. Recap first on the AI video summarizer, lock lines on the AI script generator, then let the assistant cut to that packet. The model can be fluent and still keep the sentence legal asked you to drop.
