Claude Motion Does Not Generate Footage. The Explainer Still Needs a Script
Claude Motion is code animation, not a video model. Lock the explainer script first, then export to Runway for footage. Operator guide with sources.
Claude Motion Does Not Generate Footage. The Explainer Still Needs a Script
Anthropic’s 8 October 2026 product note is explicit: Claude Motion “doesn’t use a video generation model, so there’s no generated footage and no AI-generated people.” It writes code that animates your text, charts, shapes, and images. You can edit any word, number, or timing, then download an MP4. Runway’s same-day post says it is a launch partner: export the animation into Runway to restyle, add generated video and images, edit scene-by-scene, and reformat for other channels. Motion is beta on Claude Team and Enterprise. ClipCanva is not affiliated with Anthropic, Runway, VEED, or Kapwing. Lock the spoken line on the AI script generator. Steal shot language from prompt ideas. Animate a locked still on image to video or generate motion on the AI video generator. Do not paste /motion into Slack and call the all-hands shipped.
Product facts (confirmed 12 October 2026)
| Source | Public claim | Workflow implication |
|---|---|---|
| Build live dashboards and animate explainers with Claude (8 Oct 2026) | Claude Motion is beta on Team and Enterprise. Type /motion. Claude builds an animation from your prompt; it “plays like a short video.” Adjust in the editor, revise in conversation, download as MP4. “Claude writes code that animates your text, charts, shapes, and images.” “It doesn’t use a video generation model, so there’s no generated footage and no AI-generated people.” Example jobs: a quarterly report into a 30-second all-hands explainer; motion on a board-deck chart; a product walkthrough for onboarding. |
Motion is a code-animation desk. An MP4 download is not proof a video model ran. |
| Same Anthropic page | When you want to take it further, open it in Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI, or Runway, with Canva and Captions coming soon. Enterprise: Dashboards and Motion are off by default; admins turn them on in Organization settings → Artifacts. | Export is a second desk. Admin off-by-default is a ticket, not a rumor. |
| Runway is in Claude Motion (8 Oct 2026) | Anthropic is launching Claude Motion with Runway as a launch partner. Any animation made in Motion can be exported to Runway. From there: generate new video and images, edit clips by describing the change, use Runway Agent to plan and assemble a longer cut. Use cases Runway names: headline stats plus product shots from a single reference photo; onboarding steps plus generated customer scenes; all-hands with voiceover and music; expand 16:9 into vertical and square, or localize voiceover without rebuilding the animation. | Runway is the footage / restyle / reformat desk. It is not the signed sentence. |
| VEED AI Video Script Generator | Own URL. Tone, audience, and platform controls. Step 03: copy the script or generate video. Separate AI Video Generator. | Writer and renderer stay different URLs. |
| Kapwing AI Video Script Generator | Own URL. Separate Video Generator in AI nav. Page copy: AI video scene generation up to 12 seconds; a different block says generate a video up to 5 minutes with voiceover, subtitles, and B-roll. | Kapwing still splits script and video. Do not merge those two numbers into one brief. |
Anthropic did not publish, on the pages above, a Free-plan Motion SKU, a hard maximum duration beyond the 30-second example, a ClipCanva credit map, or a claim that /motion writes Legal copy. If a capability is not on the page you are briefing from today, it is not a brief.
What Claude Motion is — and what it is not
Operators will collapse four objects into “Claude now makes the explainer video.” The public pages refuse that.
| Surface | What the public page says it does | What it does not do | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Motion (beta, Team / Enterprise) | Code-animates your text, charts, shapes, images; MP4 download; /motion |
Run a video generation model; invent product footage; invent people | Briefing “Claude generated the hero shot” |
| Claude Dashboards (beta, paid plans) | Connect Redshift / BigQuery / ClickHouse / Databricks / Snowflake (and CRM such as Salesforce); charts stay current | Sign the all-hands line; become an MP4 | Pasting a live dashboard into Motion and calling the numbers Legal-approved |
| Runway export | Restyle, add generated video/images, Agent for a longer cut, reformat 16:9 → vertical/square, add VO/music | Write the claim; prove Motion used a video model | Exporting first, locking the sentence later |
| VEED / Kapwing script URLs | Draft hooks, talking points, CTAs on a script URL | Disclose on YouTube or lock your SKU | Hitting generate-video from an unsigned paragraph |
If you are in /motion, you are on an animation desk. If you exported to Runway (or Luma, HeyGen, invideo…), you are on a footage desk. If the bottle still needs a legal sentence, you are on a writer. If you cannot tell which, do not hit export.
Pick the desk before you type /motion
The fail is treating “download as MP4” as “the explainer is covered.” Map the job.
| Job | Where it actually runs | What you must supply | What the system may invent | Fail condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One claim the clip must carry | AI script generator — or VEED / Kapwing if that is already your writer | Audience, seconds, the signed sentence | A second CTA, a health claim, a competitor name | Skipping the card because “Motion animates the deck” |
| Recap of a long cut or webinar | AI video summarizer | Source cut, claims to keep, claims to strike | Compression that changes meaning | Feeding the webinar into /motion as if code animation meant a new master |
| Motion from a locked still | Image to video, or Runway’s “product shots generated from a single reference photo” | The signed still as frame one | Camera path, extra hands, a spoken line you did not approve | Animating take three because the export looks sharper |
| New photoreal motion | AI video generator or a named video model on Compare | Locked caption, crop, seconds | Props, voices, a second location | Briefing Motion as a Veo / Omni / Kling substitute |
| Code-animated numbers | Claude Motion, after admin enable | The signed numbers and labels | Timing, easing, a chart title you did not check | Letting Claude pick the “headline stat” |
| Model / tool pick | Compare plus the live Anthropic and Runway pages | Job = code animation vs generated footage vs writer | A slide that says “Claude video” | Picking Motion because the file extension is .mp4 |
If the brief is “animate this quarter’s chart for the all-hands,” that can be Motion. If the brief is “show the bottle on a kitchen board,” that is image-to-video or a video generator. If the brief is “Claude will handle the explainer because Runway is a launch partner,” you do not have a brief.
VEED still keeps AI Video Script Generator as its own URL and copy script or generate video as a later step. Kapwing still keeps Script Generator and Video Generator as different nav items. Neither page says a Claude MP4 writes your CTA.
Creator / operator checklist
- Read Anthropic’s sentence out loud. “It doesn’t use a video generation model.” If the next sentence in Slack is “Claude now does Veo,” stop.
- Name the plan. Motion is Team and Enterprise, beta, off by default for Enterprise until an admin enables Artifacts. A Free or Pro seat is not a Motion seat unless Anthropic’s page says so today.
- Cap the spoken line before
/motion. Use the AI script generator. One sentence. Strike “#1,” ingredient claims, and competitor names you cannot defend. Motion will animate whatever text you left in the chart. - Sign the numbers. Dashboards can stay current as data changes. An all-hands MP4 does not. Freeze the figure you will show. If the dashboard refreshed after Legal signed, you have a new claim.
- Keep writer, animation, and footage as three objects. A script, a code-animated chart, a generated product shot, and a YouTube disclosure are four things. Do not hide all four under “we exported to Runway.”
- Do not confuse MP4 with generated video. An MP4 of code-drawn shapes is still code-drawn shapes. Photoreal B-roll is a different desk.
- Respect the 30-second example. Anthropic’s worked job is a 30-second all-hands explainer. That is an example, not a published max. If you need a two-minute walkthrough, that is a second shot, an edit, or Runway Agent — still not a reason to skip the card.
- Export is optional. Anthropic lists Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI, and Runway, with Canva and Captions coming soon. Pick the named tool. Do not brief “and Canva” as if it had shipped.
- Reformat is a Runway claim, not a Motion claim. 16:9 → vertical / square lives on the Runway post. Motion does not become a Shorts factory because the file downloaded.
- Keep VEED / Kapwing as a reminder, not a merge. Their script URLs still exist next to their video URLs. Yours should too: script then generate or image to video.
Worked example: a Friday all-hands that does not start in /motion
Say the job is a 30-second all-hands cutdown. Legal line approved: Same plan. Same price. Q3 revenue up 12%. Someone opened Anthropic’s page, saw /motion, saw the 30-second example, saw Runway as launch partner, and told the channel “Claude will animate the deck, we’ll export to Runway for the product shots, the explainer is covered.”
That sentence mixes five desks.
The spoken line is a writer object. Put the approved sentence on the AI script generator. Motion can put type on screen. It will not know which sentence Legal signed unless you paste that sentence. If you already live in VEED or Kapwing, their script tools are still script tools. Copy the signed line. Do not hit generate-video from the unsigned chart.
The beat list is a card object. Steal shot language from prompt ideas or the ads and Shorts prompt pack, then write four lines, not a chat novel:
- 0s — title card with the signed sentence only
- 8s — the one signed chart (12%, not a dashboard of twelve KPIs)
- 16s — locked product still, if you actually need to show the SKU
- 24s — end card, same sentence, no second CTA
The chart pass is a Motion object. Enable the beta. Type /motion. Animate that chart. Check every number against the freeze. Download the MP4. That file is still not the kitchen board.
The product shot is a footage object. Anthropic will not invent a person or a pack shot. Runway’s post says generate product shots from a single reference photo. That is image to video logic: lock the still first. If you do not have a signed still, you do not have a product shot. Generating “customers using the product” (Runway’s onboarding example) is a video generator job on AI video generator or a named model on Compare — and it is the step Anthropic explicitly does not do inside Motion.
The assembly is an edit object. Runway Agent can plan a longer cut. That is still an edit of objects you already signed. If the Agent writes a new claim, you started over.
FAQ
Does Claude Motion generate video the way Veo, Omni, or Kling do? No. Anthropic’s 8 October 2026 page says Motion does not use a video generation model, and that there is no generated footage and no AI-generated people. It writes code that animates your assets.
Is Claude Motion on every Claude plan? Not on the page checked 12 October 2026. Motion is beta on Team and Enterprise. Dashboards are beta on paid plans. Docs, Slides, and Design are out of beta on every plan, including Free. Do not mix those three sentences.
If I export to Runway, is the explainer a generated video? Only the parts you generate in Runway. The Motion export is still a code-animated explainer. Runway’s post lists generating video and images, Agent assembly, voiceover, music, and reformat as after export.
Can I skip the script because Motion animates the quarterly report? No. VEED’s script generator still ends on copy script or generate video. Kapwing still ships a script URL next to a video URL. ClipCanva does the same. An animated chart will say whatever label you left on it, including the wrong quarter.
Is Canva already a Motion export target? Anthropic lists Canva and Captions as coming soon. Named today: Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI, and Runway. Brief the live list.
Do not mix these objects
| Object | Tool | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Signed line | AI script generator | One sentence Legal will defend |
| Shot card | Prompt ideas | Beats with times, no extra SKU |
| Code animation | Claude Motion (/motion, Team/Enterprise beta) |
Numbers match the freeze; no invented people |
| Locked still → motion | Image to video | Frame one is the signed pack shot |
| Generated footage | AI video generator or Runway after export | Crop, audio, and claim still match the card |
| Model pick | Compare | Animation vs generated video named |
Anthropic gave you a way to put your numbers in motion without a video model. It did not give you a signed CTA. Write the line, freeze the chart, animate that, and only then export — do not let an MP4 talk you into skipping the writer.
