ChatGPT Plugins vs Video Script Generator: After Sora, Chat Is Not a Clip Desk

After OpenAI shut down the Sora API on September 24, 2026 with no listed replacement, ChatGPT plugins can host a vendor generator — they do not sign a script. Lock the line, then generate.

ChatGPT Plugins vs Video Script Generator: After Sora, Chat Is Not a Clip Desk

ChatGPT can still write a line. It cannot ship a Sora clip. OpenAI’s Sora discontinuation note is blunt: the Sora web and app experiences ended on 26 April 2026, and the Sora API ended on 24 September 2026. The API deprecations page lists the Videos API and every sora-2 / sora-2-pro alias with no recommended replacement — the column is ---. What ChatGPT has instead is a plugin directory: skills, connected apps, MCP servers. That is a host. It is not a video model. ClipCanva is not affiliated with OpenAI, VEED, Kapwing, Runway, Google, Kling, or MiniMax. Lock the spoken line on the AI script generator first. Then generate on the AI video generator or image to video. Do not type “make the restock cinematic” into chat and call take one a launch.

Shutdown and plugin facts (confirmed 29 September 2026)

Source Public claim Workflow implication
What to know about the Sora discontinuation Web and app experiences discontinued 26 April 2026. Sora API discontinued 24 September 2026. Export remaining content at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset. ChatGPT no longer has a first-party video generator. An export is an archive. It is not a new take.
OpenAI API deprecations (notice dated 24 March 2026) Shutdown 24 September 2026 for the Videos API and aliases sora-2, sora-2-pro, sora-2-2025-10-06, sora-2-2025-12-08, sora-2-pro-2025-10-06. Recommended replacement: --- This is a removal, not an upgrade. Do not wait for a drop-in sora-3 in the same column.
Plugins (ChatGPT / Codex docs) Plugins bundle skills and MCP servers. One public directory across ChatGPT and Codex. Install from the Plugins tab; invoke with @. Docs examples: Codex Security, Gmail, Google Drive, Slack. A plugin is a connector. The listed examples are mail, docs, and chat — not a Sora successor.
Same page Plugins work in Chat and Work on web, desktop, and mobile, and in Codex in the desktop app. The IDE extension does not support plugins. Desktop-only plugins install only in the ChatGPT desktop app. A Cursor or VS Code window is not the plugin desk unless the docs for that surface say so.
Plugins in ChatGPT and Codex A plugin can include skills, connected apps, and app templates. Installation does not bypass provider or workspace permissions. Directory visibility is not the same as install rights. Seeing a listing is not permission to spend a vendor’s credits.
VEED AI Script Generator Separate nav item from AI Video Generator. “Generate free scripts for social media videos, explainers, marketing campaigns.” Step 3: copy the script or generate video. Script and generate are two clicks, even inside one vendor.
VEED AI Video Generator “Generate videos from text, scripts, or images.” Nav still lists AI Script Generator as its own tool. Public model names include Veo 3.1, PixVerse, and Hailuo AI. A one-shot still consumes a script you have to accept.
Kapwing AI Script Generator “Turn ideas into scripts in a few clicks” — its own AI nav item, separate from Video Generator. Kapwing’s IA still splits writer and renderer.
Kapwing AI Video Generator Start with a text prompt, image, script, article, or PDF. Kai plans the generation. Public model names include Seedance, Veo, MiniMax, Happy Horse, Kling, and Grok Imagine. Kai can storyboard. Kai does not sign the claim.

OpenAI has not published, on the discontinuation note or the deprecations table, a first-party video model that replaces Sora. If a ChatGPT chat starts rendering footage, that is a vendor plugin, not OpenAI video.

What ChatGPT still is — and what it is not

Operators will collapse “Sora is gone, so ChatGPT plugins make video now.” The docs refuse that.

Surface What the public page says it does What it does not do Fail condition
ChatGPT chat, no plugin Write, rewrite, outline. Still a language model. Render a clip. The Videos API is gone. Asking “make a 8-second Veo ad” with no generator connected
Plugin directory Package skills + MCP / connected apps; @ to invoke Guarantee a video model, a duration, or a credit price Treating directory visibility as a Sora replacement
Gmail / Drive / Slack plugins (docs examples) Read or act on those systems after you connect them Author a pack-shot legal line Pasting a Drive brief into chat and calling the draft a master
VEED Script Generator Draft hooks, points, CTAs; then copy or generate Sign claims; pick your generate model for you at the script step Hitting “generate video” on an unsigned slogan
Kapwing Script Generator Structured scripts: hooks, talking points, narration, dialogue, CTAs Render the scene. Video Generator is a different tool Dumping the draft into Kai because both sit under “AI”
Kapwing Video Generator / Kai Plan + generate scenes from prompt, image, script, PDF Approve the on-screen line Letting Kai “improve the prompt” into a second CTA

If the chat answers in prose, you are on a writer. If a third-party tool starts a generation task, you are on a generate host. If you cannot tell which, stop. Do not spend.

Pick the desk before you type @

The fail is treating “plugins are in ChatGPT now” as “ChatGPT shipped the campaign.” Map the job.

Job Where it actually runs What you must supply What the system may invent Fail condition
Legal line, spoken words, on-screen claim AI script generator — or VEED’s script tool / Kapwing’s script tool if that is already your writer Audience, one claim, duration, forbidden words Extra superlatives, a second CTA @plugin cinematic product ad with no card
Shot list / clip-length beats Script output + a scene card; reusable language on prompt ideas Shot size, camera move, cut, seconds Decorative adjectives that fight the take One paragraph dumped into Kai or a plugin
Still that must stay on-model Stills desk, then image to video Approved pack shot as frame one Camera path, warped type, extra logos Asking chat to “just invent the bottle”
Motion from a locked still or a named model AI video generator or a named model on Compare Locked still and/or locked caption, crop, seconds Extra props, a second spoken line Hopping to “whatever the plugin listed” mid-brief
Long recording → short spoken plan AI video summarizer, then script Source cut, claims you will keep Compression that changes meaning Asking ChatGPT to “recap the webinar into a master” with no source lock
Script + visuals + narration in one vendor button VEED AI Video Generator: “No filming, no studio — just type and create.” A script you accept Footage, VO, a second claim Using VEED’s one-shot as proof ChatGPT signed the line
Multi-scene from prompt / PDF / script Kapwing Video Generator via Kai References, aspect ratio, a model you can actually call A storyboard you did not read Skipping the plan review Kai offers

If the brief is “install a plugin,” that is IT. If the brief is “the two-pack restocks Friday,” that is script, then generate. If the brief is “ChatGPT will handle it,” you do not have a brief.

ChatGPT plugin host vs VEED vs Kapwing vs a clip desk

Dimension ChatGPT + plugins VEED Kapwing
Official surface Sora discontinuation; deprecations; plugins docs AI Video Generator; AI Script Generator AI Video Generator; Script Generator
What they sell on the page Chat + optional skills/MCP. Sora is gone. Replacement column is blank. Generate from text, scripts, or images; visuals, voiceovers, avatars, subtitles. Script tool is its own page. Free to start in the browser. Script Generator and Video Generator are separate AI nav items. Kai plans video generations.
First-party video model None listed after 24 September 2026 Public names include Veo 3.1, PixVerse, Hailuo AI Public names include Seedance, Veo, MiniMax, Happy Horse, Kling, Grok Imagine
Script desk ChatGPT can draft. It does not sign. Use a script desk anyway. Script Generator is a different nav item; generate is a second step Script is a different tool from Video Generator
What not to use it for Proof OpenAI still renders video; spending a vendor account you did not connect; skipping export if you still have Sora files Proof that a ChatGPT plugin merged writer and renderer Proof that Kai wrote the legal line

Kapwing’s public IA still splits script and video. VEED’s generate page still sells completeness; its nav still keeps AI Script Generator as its own item. OpenAI’s plugin examples are mail, Drive, and Slack. Do not brief a restock on a directory card.

Creator / operator checklist

  1. Export Sora files if you still have them. The help article points at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset. An archive is not a new generation.
  2. Write the one line the clip must carry. A plugin cannot rescue a sentence legal will strike. Use the AI script generator. Strike “#1,” ingredient claims, and competitor names you cannot defend.
  3. Name the desk in the brief. Writer, stills, generate, or edit. “Do it in ChatGPT” is not a desk.
  4. If you install a plugin, read what it connects. The plugins docs say some plugins wait until first use to authenticate. Credits, if any, belong to the vendor. ChatGPT is not the billing page.
  5. Do not treat @ as generate. @ picks a plugin or skill. It does not lock duration, crop, or the on-screen claim.
  6. Keep a scene card. Steal shot language from prompt ideas, then generate one scene. Do not dump a paragraph into Kai or a plugin because the page mentioned storyboard.
  7. Name the model on purpose. VEED’s generate page names Veo 3.1, PixVerse, Hailuo. Kapwing’s generate page names Seedance, Veo, MiniMax, Happy Horse, Kling, Grok Imagine. Compare those on Compare rather than hopping because chat suggested one. If a number or duration is not on that vendor page, it is not a brief.
  8. If the job is captions or cuts on footage you already have, that is an edit desk — not a reason to hunt a ChatGPT video plugin.
  9. If the job is a long talk you already recorded, run the AI video summarizer first, then script. Do not ask a plugin to “just recap” into a master.

Worked example: a Friday restock that does not start in ChatGPT

Say the job is a restock cutdown. The two-pack ships Friday. Legal line approved: Same bottle. Same seal. Restock Friday. The hero still exists. Someone noticed Sora is gone and installed “a video plugin” this morning.

Do not: open ChatGPT, type @video cinematic 1080p product ad, expensive light, confident voiceover, world-class because a roundup said plugins replaced Sora.

Do:

  1. Lock the line on the AI script generator. Do not add “clinically proven” in chat.
  2. Confirm the still. If the bottle was shot, you are in image to video from that frame — not in “let the plugin invent a label.”
  3. Generate one scene on the AI video generator or a named model you can actually call. Check the vendor’s own credit warning.
  4. If you still want a ChatGPT plugin, paste the signed card + locked still, name one model the vendor page lists, and generate one scene. Then watch the file. Do not accept a second spoken line.
  5. VO stays a separate desk unless you already recorded it. A generate page that lists voiceover is not permission to ship an unsigned voice.

That is the whole product. OpenAI removed the Videos API and left the replacement column blank. Plugins put other people’s tools next to the chat. They did not make the restock true.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT make videos now that Sora is gone? Not with an OpenAI video model. The discontinuation note ended the apps on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026. The deprecations table lists no replacement. A plugin can call a vendor. That vendor renders. ChatGPT hosts.

Is a ChatGPT plugin a video script generator? No. Plugins package skills and connections. They do not sign the claim. Lock the line on the AI script generator first. Kapwing and VEED already keep Script Generator as its own tool for the same reason.

Did OpenAI name a Sora successor in the API docs? Not on the deprecations page. Shutdown date 2026-09-24, recommended replacement --- for the Videos API and the Sora 2 aliases. Treat “Sora 3 in ChatGPT” as unconfirmed until that table changes.

Should I generate in ChatGPT or on a dedicated video desk? Use ChatGPT to draft and to invoke a plugin after the card is signed and the still is locked. Use the AI video generator or image to video when you need a scene desk with model, crop, and duration in one place. Use VEED only if you actually want their script-plus-narration one-shot, and you still have to accept the script. Use Kapwing when you want Kai to plan scenes — then read the plan.

Does this replace exporting old Sora files? No. If you still have Sora content, export from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset as the help article says. A plugin will not resurrect a take you never downloaded.

The directory changed the round trip. It did not change the order of operations: script, still, then generate.
